Audience Deficiency Unit (ADU) is essentially a form of compensation provided to advertisers when the initial programming doesn’t meet the guaranteed ratings or audience metrics. If a network or broadcaster promises certain ratings to an advertiser and fails to deliver, they owe the advertiser those “missed” views or impressions. They fulfill this obligation by providing ADUs, or additional ad slots, without charge. This process is often referred to as “make-goods.”
