Backfill” refers to the process of filling unsold or unreserved ad inventory with ads from secondary sources, typically ad networks or programmatic platforms. When a publisher has ad space that hasn’t been sold directly to advertisers or reserved for specific campaigns, they can use backfill to ensure that the space doesn’t go to waste and still generates revenue. Essentially, backfill helps maximize the monetization of every available ad impression.
